3590
tape storage systems
IBM's
MagStar Tape Drive is designed to take advantage of the high capacity
of our new Black Watch 3590 tape cartridges. Based on proven IBM
3490E linear serpentine recording technology, it provides maximum
reliability for both start/stop and streaming operations. It offers
10 GB of storage per cartridge ( up to 30 GB using data compression
), a 10 cartridge magazine, a 9 MB/second transfer rate and an
improved data compaction process. The IBM 3590 High Performance
Tape Subsystem and Black Watch 3590 tape cartridges are engineered
to integrate seamlessly into an IBM 3494 system, extending its
capacity to 91.2 terabytes of compressed data.
10
GB recording capacity
The
Black Watch 3590 tape cartridge stores up to 10 GB of uncompressed
data. That's more than 12 times the storage capacity of 3490E
cartridge and 50 times the capacity of 3480 cartridge

What
is Black Watch ?
A
conductive coating which dissipates static. This reduces errors
caused by static attraction of airborne debris.
Any debris wound into the tape will have its impact minimised
by the 'cushioning' effect of Black Watch back coating.
How
does it work?
Tape
expands and contracts with changes in the environment. And as
it does, it can slip out of place. Interlayer slippage can cause
problems ranging from minor errors to catastrophes. Textured Black
Watch backcoating helps guard against those problems by holding
each tape layer in place, providing a high level of day-to-day
performance and excellent long-term archival properties.
