In
1989 Imation acquired the IBM tape manufacturing plant in Tuscon,
USA, adjacent to the IBM development labratory.
The
3490E tape was the first new Imation product to emerge from the
3M/IBM co-development effort. And, in an industry where recalls
have occurred, 3M got it right the first time.
The
3490E is now also available as a Black Watch product.

What
is Black Watch ?
A
conductive coating which dissipates static. This reduces errors
caused by static attraction of airborne debris.
Any debris wound into the tape will have its impact minimised
by the 'cushioning' effect of Black Watch back coating.
How
does it work?
Tape
expands and contracts with changes in the environment. And as
it does, it can slip out of place. Interlayer slippage can cause
problems ranging from minor errors to catastrophes. Textured Black
Watch backcoating helps guard against those problems by holding
each tape layer in place, providing a high level of day-to-day
performance and excellent long-term archival properties.
